Who We Are

GLENN, MERYDTH, ROWAN AND MATTHEW

Merydth is a career international development worker with a passion for her full time day job. In her spare time, she summons up energy for family and farm and brings a city girl's sense of wonder and excitement to nurturing vegetables from seeds, selling at farmers' markets and coaxing newborn calves to shelter.
Glenn grew up in a family of farmers. In his youth, he spent summers working on his family's hobby farm as well as bigger commercial operations -- including Canada's largest feedlot -- before pursuing his dream of becoming a journalist and conflict analyst in Africa for a decade and a half. After becoming parents, the dream changed: Glenn and Merydth wanted to build a family farm similar to the mixed-use, diverse small holdings of Glenn's grandparents. Staying small would encourage sustainability and allow livestock and poultry to be raised without relying on environmentally-unfriendly pesticides and fertilizers.
In 2012, Merydth and Glenn purchased a 93 acre farm less than a mile from Balderson, an old dairy community that gave its name to the popular cheese. For nearly two centuries, Scottish migrants -- the Stewarts, MacGregors among others -- raised milk cows and grew field crops here. The old red brick farm house needed attention and there was much work to do but the soil was rich and deep. The family feels honoured to be stewards of this plot of earth for future generations.
Fertile fields that formerly grew conventional cash crops have been seeded to grass and nitrogen-capturing clover and alfalfa for our cattle, chickens and laying hens.
In addition to providing healthy meat, these animals return valuable nutrients to the soil. Intensive rotational grazing techniques are used to improve soil and plant health and reduce the need for potentially harmful tillage.
With the help of Glenn's mother, Johanna, a large kitchen garden has flourished in an old horse pasture.
